Biomedical research and/or teaching facilities include various types of laboratories: microbiology, toxicology, pathology, etc. While the laboratories have different functions, they have a common purpose and requirements; experimentation requiring clean utensils, glassware and, usually, culture media. They also generate biohazardous waste which must be decontaminated before handling for disposal.

Reusable items, most commonly glassware, must be cleaned, and in some applications, sterilized, after use to prevent crosscontamination. Locally prepared culture media must also be sterilized before use. Getinge offers a complete range of laboratory glassware washers (Lancer brand) for all these applications.

To maintain the health and comfort of the animals and to prevent cross-contamination, cages must be regularly and frequently cleaned and disinfected. Waste bedding must be safely disposed of and replaced with clean material, and the cages must be thoroughly cleaned. The type of washer to be used depends on the type, size and quantity of cages and the required reprocessing frequency. Getinge offer models to accommodate any demand, from relatively small cabinet washers through to high capacity tunnel washers. When processing cages and bedding there are two additional considerations: ergonomics and allergies. Handling cages is a repetitive process which can be harmful to the animal technicians. Furthermore, some bedding materials may cause allergenic reaction. For these reasons it may be worthwhile to consider the use of robotics for high capacity processing.
