Minimizing downtime in cGMP cleaning processes with IO-Link technology

In pharmaceutical production, maintaining equipment uptime is essential for operational efficiency and process safety. Particularly in cleanroom environments, unplanned downtime can disrupt workflows, increase overhead costs, and in some cases contribute to delays in drug availability.

To address these challenges, Getinge has introduced IO-Link technology into the GEW 888 neo, a compact cGMP washer/dryer developed for cleanrooms and clean spaces. This integration supports consistent, validated cleaning processes while simplifying maintenance and reducing installation efforts.

Digital monitoring for improved process reliability

The use of IO-Link enables real-time monitoring of key parameters such as temperature, pressure, detergent flow, and conductivity. Compared to traditional analog signals, the fully digital and interference-resistant data transmission improves accuracy and helps detect performance deviations early.

Integrated diagnostics and bidirectional communication allow for both data retrieval and remote parameter adjustments. This facilitates more stable operations and allows potential issues to be addressed proactively.

Shorter commissioning and simplified maintenance

One of the key advantages of IO-Link is its ability to streamline device setup and maintenance. During commissioning, configuration data is transferred digitally, eliminating the need for manual sensor calibration. If a component replacement becomes necessary, device parameters are automatically transferred to the new unit – helping to reduce downtime and service effort.

In practice, this means:

  • Reduced installation and commissioning times
  • Minimized need for repeated SOP recalibration
  • Simplified sensor replacement without reconfiguration

Designed for Integration

Thanks to its fieldbus-neutral architecture, IO-Link can be integrated into existing or new IIoT automation systems. This flexibility supports long-term standardization efforts across facilities and contributes to improved interoperability between systems and devices.
