The benefits of a Hybrid OR in the eyes of an experienced neurosurgeon

For Dr Azmin Kass Rosman, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and Head of Department at the Hospital Sungai Buloh in Selangor, Malaysia, the Hybrid Operating Room (OR) is the pathway to increase precision and minimizing risks when performing challenging Cranial and Spinal procedures.

“The imaging system enables me to navigate with better accuracy, which helps reduce risks of complications and shortens operation time. This is beneficial both for the patients and the efficiency of the hospital,” Dr Rosman says. “The flexibility of the Hybrid OR enables it to be shared by several disciplines at the hospital, which also makes it a sound investment.”
A Hybrid OR is a surgical workspace that starts with a multifunctional operating table at the centre, surrounded with intraoperative imaging equipment, such as angiography systems, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, which may be positioned for intra-operative scanning.

The operating table offers versatility and stability in positioning of the patient to obtain an optimum surgical access, while the imaging devices allow the surgeon to evaluate the position, to perform procedures or interventional surgery in a minimally-invasive manner and to reevaluate during or following the surgical procedure.

In addition to the surgical accuracy, Dr Rosman also emphasizes other benefits.

“The Hybrid OR improves the working conditions for my entire team. Everything becomes much more organized. The operating table is user-friendly and very easy to position. The pendants liberate space around the table,” he explains. “We are also pleased that Getinge’s equipment has proven to be very reliable.”

Dr Azmin Rosman has been a neurosurgeon for over 30 years – and looking back at previous experiences underscores his positive opinion of the Hybrid OR.

“Years ago, when working as the only neurosurgeon in in Penang in the north of Malaysia, I performed around 600 surgeries per year. It was old school then. I think that some outcomes of clipping aneurysms and removing tumors would have been much more favorable, if I have had access to a Hybrid OR,” he says.

“Nowadays, I can see that the Hybrid OR gives the younger generation of neurosurgeons more confidence to take on challenges. This helps them to improve their skills faster.”

Dr Rosman has lost count of all the patients he has saved in his long career – but every once in a while, a friendly voice in the streets of Kuala Lumpur reminds him of the good he has done.

“Normally, I don’t think much about saving lives - it’s my job. But when a previous patient approaches me on the street to thank me, it feels good to have a role in life that enables me to give people more time with their family and friends,” he concludes.
