Getinge Advances ECLS Technology with Cardiohelp II – The Next Evolution in Extracorporeal Life Support

Getinge today announced the receipt of CE mark for Cardiohelp II, the next evolution of its extracorporeal life support (ECLS) platform. Building on the legacy of Cardiohelp-i - widely recognized within acute care for shaping modern extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) transport and extracorporeal life support practice - Cardiohelp II represents the next step forward in intelligent, connected and clinically advanced ECLS.

As a global leader in cardiopulmonary technologies, Getinge has played a defining role in the development and broader adoption of modern ECLS practice. Building on a foundation of proven excellence, combined with Getinge's institutional knowledge and a firm commitment to its customers, the Cardiohelp system has supported clinicians worldwide in delivering extracorporeal life support to critically ill patients. The introduction of Cardiohelp II enables clinicians to have deeper clinical insight, clearer guidance and greater confidence when managing complex ECLS care.

“For more than ten years, Cardiohelp-i has supported hospitals and transport teams in caring for critically ill patients. Getinge's ECLS products have contributed significantly to the transportable ECMO standard of care that is practiced by clinicians worldwide today,” says Elin Frostehav, President, Acute Care Therapies at Getinge. “With Cardiohelp II, we are advancing that legacy with intelligent technology and expanded clinical insights that support healthcare professionals in making faster, more informed decisions for critically ill patients.”

Cardiohelp II was developed in close collaboration with healthcare professionals to address the increasing complexity of ECLS management across the continuum of care. The system integrates advanced monitoring capabilities and step-by-step workflow guidance, while alarm-driven workflows help healthcare teams identify and address issues efficiently.  Its compact design and reduced weight enable smooth transitions within the hospital and during transport.

To strengthen patient care, Cardiohelp II incorporates advanced monitoring capabilities that can provide timely clinical insights. Improved gas management with an integrated electronic gas blender, expanded trend analysis, optimized blood parameter monitoring, and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-based rSO2 monitoring for continuous regional oxygenation monitoring. These integrated features support informed decision-making during demanding care scenarios and enable care teams to detect changes earlier and respond proactively.

Together, these capabilities create a more connected and intelligent ECLS platform and a more complete clinical assessment of a patient’s condition over time to support consistent therapy delivery, enhance situational awareness and help clinicians manage extracorporeal life support with greater precision.

“Cardiohelp II brings together advanced monitoring, streamlined workflows and a highly integrated system architecture designed specifically for diverse care environments,” says Dieter Engel, Vice President, Cardiopulmonary at Getinge. “These enhancements offer clearer guidance, consistent performance and the flexibility healthcare professionals need to focus on what matters most - delivering optimal care for critically ill patients.”

Cardiohelp II has received the CE certificate and will enter a limited first clinical use phase with selected clinical partners, enabling early clinical experience and continued collaboration with leading ECMO centers. A broader commercial release across CE markets is expected to follow in the near future.
